For quite some time, I always tried to buy colorful and unique pieces that I saw in catalogues or magazines, thinking that this would help me to appear more stylish. Unfortunately, this method always got me stuck when it came time to get dressed in the morning. I had all of these colorful, unique pieces, but how was I supposed to put them all together?!?!
What I’ve come to realize over the past year or so is that the women I consider most stylish are those who understand the value of “basic” pieces and neutral colors. Having these pieces in their closets allows them to create stylish combinations with more colorful or unique pieces. Additionally, mixing multiple “basics” and neutral items actually enables them to create some of the most stylish looks I’ve seen.
Here are three (well…really four) of my favorite bloggers rocking the “basics” and proving that style doesn’t have to be as hard as it may seem:
Molly and Sally @ A Piece of Toast
Look #1 = black blouse + dot print jeans + strappy black booties
Look #2 = white peplum top + dark skinny jeans + metallic chunky heel
I love that both of these looks are literally comprised of jeans and a blouse. How much easier can it get?! While you might not find the exact shape of each blouse, both are in neutral colors – black and white – making it easy to find something very similar. I especially love that both Molly (left) and Sally’s (rights) jeans each have a subtle print. Again, this might be more difficult to find, but using a jean in a basic wash would still complete these looks. The beauty of this type of look is that you can dress it up with some heels, like they did, or keep it more casual with a pair of flat sandals.
Corilynn @ Corilynn: Small World Big Style
Look #1 = denim jacket + gray tee + camo pants + ankle bootie
Look #2 = long-sleeved navy tee + red jeans + flats
Standing at less than 5′ tall, Cori sure know how to make a big statement. I am so envious of the fact that she can still buy her clothes from the children’s section – so much more affordable! That being said, she never dresses like a child and always seems to pull off an air of sophistication with whatever she has on. I especially love her camo pants and am keeping my eye out for a “skinny” version that I can pair with a gray tee or sweater just like she did.
Lindsey @ Our Happiness Tour
Look #1 = baseball hat + white tee + black blazer + dark jeans + converse
Look #2 = white tee + denim vest + olive pants + leopard wedge sandal
Lindsey is one of the newest bloggers that I follow, but she has quickly become a fav. She is a young mom of two, but somehow always manages to throw together really cute ensembles and to look absolutely happy (hence the name of her blog). While both of the looks I’ve featured highlight her ability to use a neutral palette and basis pieces, she’s also really great at mixing basics with funkier complements. Her collection of printed pants is particularly drool-worthy.
