Jam of the Week – No Way by The Naked and Famous

April 9, 2014 By Tyler Leave a Comment

Jam of the week 2 speakersDespite not being a snowboarder or even much of a skier, a few years ago I watched a snowboarding film called The Art of Flight. It was awesome.

It was made by Travis Rice, an up-and-coming snowboarder from Jackson, WY. The film had heavy financial backing from Red Bull and featured some incredible images. Think the BBC’s Planet Earth-style videography mixed with people heli-snowboarding down ridiculous avalanche-prone Alaskan mountains.

In addition to the impressive action shots and videography, The Art of Flight has a really killer soundtrack. It features two songs by The Naked and Famous: Young Blood and No Way–the Jam of the Week.

No Way is sweet and relaxing until it kicks the power on for a guitar solo chorus. Then it is relaxing again, until it is not. The calm and the intense continue to mix and meld throughout the song. I just love it and hope you do too.

Jam of the Week – Do I Wanna Know? by the Arctic Monkeys

March 26, 2014 By Tyler Leave a Comment

Jam of the week 2 speakersThis week’s song is from the the Arctic Monkeys. Like Modest Mouse, the Arctic Monkeys is a group that I have been meaning to listen to for a long time. Well, I finally got my act together and am here to file this Jam of the Week report: the Arctic Monkeys are really good.

I have spent most of my listening time with their newest album AM. The album is really bluesy and sounds like something the Black Keys would have written–just with less up-beat rhythms. Released just last year, the album climbed as high as #6 on billboards charts–I assume behind some combination of One Direction, Justin Bieber, and Miley Cyrus albums.

My favorite song (at the moment at least) is the opening track of the album: Do I Wanna Know? which sets the tone for the album right away. The slow beat and great guitar riff pull you right in. What a powerful way to start an album off? Enjoy.

Jam of the Week – 3rd Planet by Modest Mouse

March 5, 2014 By Tyler Leave a Comment

Jam of the week 2 speakersMy music taste in high school was not what you would call “enlightened”. Tom Petty, AC/DC, and Whitesnake were the ‘bomb dot com’ when it was still cool to say “bomb dot com”.

I didn’t ‘discover’ The Beatles until college. That’s right, it took me 18 years to discover the most famous band of all time. Of course, since college I have become soooooo-phisticated! Does anyone really think their 18-year-old selves had it all together?

Anyways, since I missed so many good bands and songs while I was busy Free Fallin’ through high school, I have slowly been rediscovering the bands the cool kids were listening to. Of those, Modest Mouse has to be my favorite.

3rd Planet is the opening track off their album The Moon and Antarctica, which was released my freshmen year of high school. This album is loaded, but recently I have been stuck on 3rd Planet. I am a sucker for songs that change speeds and have different feels, and this one has that in spades.

Like this or other Modest Mouse songs? Let me know in the comments. You can check out 3rd Planet below. Careful! This one drops a few F-bombs, but they feel like polite ones…whatever that means.
