Jessica and I are hiking the John Muir Trail which we will follow for 238.8 miles through 6 federally protected areas including Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks. Before the trip we prepared a quick summary of our plans for each day. That way
our parents curious folks can follow along. Use this link to see all of the posts. Today is day 1 of our hike.
Start: Bridalveil Falls Parking Area
Camp: Pohono Trail Near McGurk Meadows Junction
Today’s Stats: 8.01 mi / +3950′ / -1118′
Total Stats: 8.01 mi / +3950′ / -1118′
Today is our first day on the trail! Well technically, we won’t be on the John Muir Trail until tomorrow. To make getting a permit easier, we began our hike about 20 trail miles from the JMT start at Happy Isles and will join up with the trail around lunch time tomorrow. That may sound like a negative, but the really it just means we get to walk by some of the most magnificent views in the park.
We start in Yosemite valley and climb to Tunnel View a roadside overlook with views of Yosemite Valley, El Capitan, and Half Dome (see above photo). From there the trail gets really steep as we make out way to the southern rim of the canyon. This day is shorter than most of our days, but the elevation gain will ensure that it isn’t easy!
Once on the canyon rim, we will make our way along the Pohono Trail which passes a number of points: Stanford, Crocker, and Dewey. There (probably) won’t be snow though. I’ll try to convince Jessica to camp near one of the overlooks, but it probably won’t work!
